Tai Solarin University of Education, an Ogun state-owned Institution became a full-fledged University on January 29, 2005 as the first University of Education in Nigeria, second in Africa and eight in the world. That brought about the formation 1-2-8
TASUED was formed out of Tai Solarin College Of Education (TASCE) which was formerly Ogun State College of Education
TASCE ran degree courses in affiliation with the University of Ibadan before TASUED evolved. As a result, the college shared campus with TASUED until the former was later moved out in 2008 to stand alone at Omu-Ijebu
TASUED has a solid network connection with The First University of Education in Africa, University of Education, Winneba in Ghana which was established in 1992.
A new government came to power in 2011 and attempted to scrap TASUED. Students of the noble institution rose up against the decision and formed the #OccupyTASUED campaign.
On February 14, 2012, on one of their trips to the state house in Oke-Mosan Abeokuta, the bus conveying TASUED comrades got its tyre punctured on motion and tumbled twice. The accident inflicted injury on many and eventually caused the death of Olatunji Fashina aka Humble TeeJay. Layemi, Azeez Agboola (Olofin), Ishola Crown, Owoblow, Tola Ben and few others were also in the bus that was involved in the accident.
Today, Comrade Tunji Fashina is being honoured as a hero of the successful struggle ’cause he paid the huge price. The Students Union Govt (SUG) building got named after him.
Following the mishap, TASUED students became hell-bent on stopping the government from scrapping TASUED. The Commissioner of Education once appeared on Channels TV to give reasons for the scrapping decision but a question that threw him off balance was when asked why they would submerge a University that ranks 38th in Nigeria (as at then) under another (Olabisi Onabanjo University that ranks 47th).
One of Dagrin’s last performances was in TASUED. He performed on TASUED’s Fresher’s day on January 29, 2010 and later died in April the same year.
July 26, 2011 was another bloody day in the Ijagun Campus of TASUED as Lasisi Olawale aka Zigima, a 200 level student of History and Diplomatic Studies got killed in a shoot-out by Policemen that invaded the school. His body was dumped at the state hospital after the policemen framed him up as a rapist. Zigima was an active sportsman on campus before his death. This occurrence led to another unrest on campus which was later tagged ‘Zigima War’ when over 500 students trooped out to protest the killing of their colleague. The police station at Abapawa was burnt down as they also advanced to the Police barracks at Igbeba where officers unleashed fire on them arresting over 70 students.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Awonusi denounced the students saying their action was unruly. They were held in detention at Eleweran for a couple of weeks that some had to miss exams.
On January 9, 2013 Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade was announced the new Vice-Chancellor of the University following the sack of Prof. Olusegun Awonusi by the state government. She’s the first female VC of the institution and the third Vice Chancellor, the first being Prof. Olukayode Oyesiku.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and multi-billionaire, Aliko Dangote hold honorary degrees from TASUED.
TASUED is 12 years old and waxing stronger.
