Nollywood Star Nearly Poisoned Herself Amid Distress Over Unfounded Gossip, Urges Support for Mental Health Awareness
Nollywood actress and filmmaker Eniola Ajao has opened up about the severe emotional impact caused by false rumours circulating about her online. Speaking on Nollywood on Radio, a program focused on Nigerian cinema, Ajao shared that the distress from a particularly damaging rumour drove her to the brink of poisoning herself, marking one of the darkest moments of her life.
Recalling the experience, Ajao said, “I almost poisoned myself because there was news about me online that was far from true. It was the first time in my life that I faced something so painful. I didn’t eat for seven straight days. People around me can testify – I didn’t go anywhere.” The unverified claims not only affected her emotional state but also hindered her ability to focus on planning her next film project.
During this difficult period, Ajao’s family became her main source of support. Her sisters reached out, urging her to push through the pain, while her son contacted family members to express concern about her well-being. “My son was reaching out to everyone, saying I was struggling with this lie online,” Ajao recounted.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ajao admitted, “I don’t even want to remember those things, honestly.” She shared her experience to highlight the toll that false information and online harassment can take on individuals, especially those in the public eye.
