Pastor defends inviting secular musicians to his birthday, citing friendship and “good news.”
Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, founder of the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPAC Nation), has sparked conversations online by referring to popular Nigerian musician David Adeleke, known as Davido, as a gospel artist.
During an appearance on the Off The Record podcast, which gained attention on Monday, Adegboyega explained his perspective, stating that the term “gospel” means “good news,” and he believes Davido’s music embodies that essence.
“Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artiste. Davido is a gospel artiste. Have you heard: ‘Because I stand strong?’” Adegboyega remarked, referencing Davido’s hit song Stand Strong.
The pastor addressed criticism about inviting secular musicians to perform at his recent birthday celebration instead of traditional gospel artists. He clarified that the performers, including Davido and Zlatan, are his close friends who have stood by him over the years.
“What I had then was my friends—friends who are there through thick and thin. Davido told me: ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They’re my friends. I didn’t pay any of them. They love me, and I will give my friends platforms,” Adegboyega explained.
Adegboyega also shared his thoughts on gospel artists who, he claimed, judge him instead of building relationships. “If gospel artists aren’t my friends and are instead joining the bandwagon to criticize me by asking, ‘Is that a church?’ What should I do? Drag them with a rope?” he quipped.
He emphasized his close bond with Zlatan, describing him as a “son” and saying, “His kids are my kids, and his parents are in my house.”
The pastor firmly stated that his events would always feature his friends, regardless of their genre, and hinted at even larger gatherings in the future. “My friends will always sing at my events, and the next one will be bigger because my circle of friends keeps growing,” Adegboyega said.
