LAPD Confirms Voluntary Disappearance as Father Dies in Tragic Incident
Los Angeles police have revealed new developments in the case of Hannah Kobayashi, who was reported missing last month. Surveillance footage from U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows Hannah crossing the border into Mexico on foot, carrying her luggage and traveling alone.
The LAPD’s Missing Persons Unit reviewed the footage after investigators traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials now classify her case as a voluntary disappearance, with no evidence of foul play or trafficking.
A Voluntary Departure
Hannah was reported missing after failing to board a connecting flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to New York. Authorities now confirm she intentionally missed the flight, purchasing a bus ticket from downtown L.A.’s Union Station to San Ysidro, a major border crossing point. She then crossed into Mexico shortly after arriving.
The police investigation uncovered additional footage of Hannah in Los Angeles last month, including images of her retrieving her luggage at LAX. Before her departure from Hawaii, Hannah reportedly told others she wanted to “step away from modern connectivity.”
Family Tragedy
The case took a devastating turn last week when Hannah’s father, who had traveled from Hawaii to search for her, was found dead at LAX. Authorities believe he died by suicide, leaping from a parking structure.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell has urged Hannah to contact her family, law enforcement, or the U.S. Embassy to confirm her safety.
