State laments underrepresentation of Lagosians in recent military recruitment, urges equal participation
The Lagos State Government has called on the state’s youths to consider joining the military, expressing concern over the low enrollment of Lagosians in recent recruitment drives. The appeal was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, during a quarterly meeting with the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Ikeja on Wednesday.
Salu-Hundeyin emphasized the importance of national security as a collective responsibility, urging more youths to see military service as a valuable contribution to the state and the country. She noted that during the last recruitment exercise, indigenous youths of Lagos were notably absent, a trend she described as “disheartening.”
The Secretary also highlighted that the Federal Government has mandated equal recruitment across states, with each state allocated 150 slots for military enrollment. Lagos, however, has not been taking full advantage of this opportunity.
“We discovered that in the military in Nigeria, Lagos State has been seriously short-changed. We hardly have people there. So, we are looking at this opportunity now, that it should not escape indigenes again,” Salu-Hundeyin said.
She reiterated that national security is the responsibility of all citizens and urged Lagos youths to embrace the opportunity to serve. “It should not be for a particular group only… Unfortunately, in Lagos State, our children don’t like to join the military. They don’t see any reason they should be part of the army. If your state does not participate, you are short-changing your state,” she added.
