Dutch football legend Johan Neeskens has passed away at the age of 73, the Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) confirmed on Monday. Neeskens, renowned for his role in the revolutionary “Total Football” style of play, was a key figure for both Ajax and the Netherlands national team during the 1970s.

“With Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world loses a legend,” the KNVB said in a statement, acknowledging the impact Neeskens had on football both in the Netherlands and around the world.

Neeskens earned 49 caps for the Dutch national team and was part of the squads that reached the World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978, finishing as runners-up on both occasions. At Ajax, he played a pivotal role in their dominance, helping the club win three consecutive European Cups and two Eredivisie titles.

His career also saw him spend five successful seasons at Barcelona, where he won the Copa del Rey and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

“His name is forever linked to European successes with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona, and two World Cup finals for the Dutch national team,” the KNVB added. “With his characteristic tackles, sublime insights, and iconic penalties, he will forever remain one of the most prominent and beloved players to ever play for our country.”

After retiring in 1991, Neeskens transitioned into coaching, including a stint as assistant coach for the Dutch national team from 1995 to 2000, further cementing his legacy in football.
