Chiefs Stay Undefeated with Win Over Chargers, Travis Kelce Shines Amid Injury Setback The Kansas City Chiefs secured a pivotal win against their division rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers, on Sunday, maintaining their undefeated streak this season. The 31-24 victory wasn’t dominant, but it showcased a much-needed resurgence from star tight end Travis Kelce, who turned in a vintage performance just days before his 35th birthday.

After a relatively quiet start to the season, Kelce reminded fans why he’s one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. He led the Chiefs in all key receiving categories, including targets, receptions, yards, and yards after catch, stepping up when his team needed him the most.

Kelce’s standout performance was crucial, as the Chiefs were hit with an early setback when wide receiver Rashee Rice exited the game in the first quarter with a knee injury. With Rice out, Kelce quickly became Patrick Mahomes’ primary target, racking up seven catches for 89 yards. Of those, five catches and 74 yards came in the first half, including a critical 38-yard gain during the opening drive.

Mahomes Praises Kelce’s Performance

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has long relied on Kelce in key moments, wasn’t surprised by his tight end’s strong showing. Mahomes explained that with Rice sidelined and the Chargers focusing on covering the outside, it opened opportunities for Kelce to take over in the middle of the field.

“I think it’s a mixture of everything,” Mahomes said. “With Rashee going down early, you’ve got to factor that [in], and you’ve got to put Kelce back in that situation where he’s getting high-volume catches. The Chargers took away some of the outside stuff, leaving the middle open, and we were able to get it to Trav in zone coverage. The whole Kelce thing, in general, hasn’t been a worry to me. I know whenever we need him, he’s going to make plays, and that’s what he did today.”

Kelce’s timely resurgence helped the Chiefs stay on track as they push toward another successful season, with Mahomes and Kelce continuing to be one of the NFL’s most dangerous duos.
