Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, has categorically denied recent reports suggesting that his client intends to depart Napoli before the conclusion of the summer transfer window.
In the face of relentless pursuit by prominent European clubs, Calenda sought to distance Osimhen from the speculation, asserting that the rumors were baseless. “Reports of my plan to explore all the options now and then not signing a new contract at Napoli are completely fake,” stated Calenda, as quoted by esteemed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Monday. Furthermore, he revealed that Napoli had presented Osimhen with a lucrative long-term contract and the club was now awaiting his final decision.
The 22-year-old striker garnered attention last season after emerging as the leading scorer in Serie A, netting an impressive 31 goals in 39 games. His outstanding performances played a pivotal role in Napoli clinching their first Scudetto in 33 years. Consequently, top European clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich have been fervently pursuing his signature.
Despite the interest from rival clubs, Napoli is reluctant to part ways with their prized asset during the current transfer window. The Italian side has gone to great lengths to persuade Osimhen to stay, offering him a contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the squad. However, this substantial offer has not deterred other clubs from attempting to lure him away from Naples.
To dissuade potential suitors, Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has set an exorbitant asking price of €150 million (£129 million) for the Nigerian forward. This staggering figure is intended to discourage any potential buyers and emphasizes Napoli’s commitment to retaining Osimhen’s services.
Currently enjoying his holidays in Lagos after aiding the Super Eagles in a crucial 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone, a win that secured Nigeria’s qualification for the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, Osimhen remains at the center of intense speculation.
Meanwhile, Napoli’s newly appointed sporting director, Mauro Meluso, expressed his determination to retain Osimhen, highlighting the significance of such an achievement for him personally. Having recently replaced Cristiano Guintoli in the role, Meluso understands the value that Osimhen brings to the team. “I have just arrived, and I understand that retaining Osimhen would be a significant achievement,” stated Meluso in an interview with Tutto Napoli. “He brings a unique dimension to the team, and players of his caliber are rare.”
As the summer transfer window progresses, the footballing world eagerly awaits Osimhen’s final decision. Will he commit his future to Napoli and continue to play a pivotal role in the club’s pursuit of further success, or will the allure of a move to one of Europe’s elite teams prove too tempting for the prolific Nigerian striker? Only time will tell.
