In a groundbreaking move, the Recording Academy has announced the inclusion of a new category, ‘Best African Music Performance,’ for the upcoming 66th edition of the Grammy Awards.
This marks the first time in the history of the prestigious awards that a category will be dedicated specifically to African music.

According to the statement, the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category will showcase a diverse range of 19 music genres from across the African continent.
The newly added category will encompass popular genres such as Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro-Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz.
In addition to the ‘Best African Music Performance,’ two other categories have been introduced for the 2024 Grammy Awards.
The categories are ‘Best Alternative Jazz Album’ and ‘Best Pop Dance Recording,’ further expanding the recognition of exceptional musical talents worldwide.
“Our goal at the Recording Academy is to recognize and honor the very best in music from across the globe. Every year, we strive to accurately represent and celebrate the various cultures, influences, and genres that shape our world and provide the soundtrack to our lives,” the statement reads.
