Atiku Abubakar Urges Nigerians to Unite in Rescuing Democracy from Bondage
Democracy in Nigeria Requires Continuous Efforts, Says Atiku Abubakar

In a heartfelt Democracy Day message to Nigerians, Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, emphasized the urgent need to rescue democracy in Nigeria from its current state of bondage. Atiku called for the collective energy and commitment of every citizen to safeguard and strengthen the democratic system.

Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Atiku acknowledged that the nation was celebrating a return to civil rule, but he emphasized that it was crucial for the country to reflect on its journey towards becoming a fully democratic society. He recognized the progress made in establishing democracy as the norm in Nigerian politics, particularly considering the hardships endured during the dark days of military dictatorships.

However, Atiku pointed out that true democracy requires a firm commitment to fairness and adherence to the rules of electoral processes. He expressed concern that the current practice in Nigeria still allows the governing elite to determine the outcome of elections, leaving the populace vulnerable to tendencies of dictatorship.

The former Vice President stated, “For our democracy to be fully fledged, it must constantly evolve away from the current practice where the governing elite determines the outcome of elections.” He emphasized the need for a more inclusive and participatory electoral process that empowers the citizens to shape the future of the nation.

Reflecting on the activism that paved the way for Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation, Atiku stressed that there is still much work to be done. He acknowledged that democracy and the process of democratization are ongoing endeavors, demanding continuous efforts to make the system self-sustaining and independent from anti-democratic elements.

Atiku underlined the importance of collective energy and commitment to attain civil rule, as well as a simultaneous dedication to advancing the cause of democracy and the democratization process. He emphasized that the country’s future and the fate of its democracy depend heavily on the actions and choices of Nigerians today.

“To achieve this noble goal, our commitment to the cause of democracy must be eternal,” Atiku stated. He cautioned that those opposing democracy are not resting, highlighting the need for heightened efforts to overcome these challenges. The former Vice President concluded his message by congratulating Nigerians on the occasion of the return to civil rule while urging everyone to recognize that democracy in Nigeria remains in bondage, necessitating the collective energy and determination of all citizens to rescue it.

As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, Atiku Abubakar’s impassioned call for unity and active participation in safeguarding democracy serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle to protect and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
