Lagos, Nigeria – In a devastating blow to the Nigerian entertainment industry, the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners’ Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) announced the untimely deaths of two revered actors, Mukaila Adedigba and Wasiu Adegbenro. TAMPAN’s National President, Bolaji Amusan, expressed profound grief and shared his condolences in an official statement released on Monday.
The news sent shockwaves throughout the industry, leaving the members of TAMPAN in a state of disbelief. Alongside Adedigba and Adegbenro, the association also mourned the passing of popular Nollywood stars Murphy Afolabi and English actor Saint Obi. This succession of tragic losses has deeply impacted TAMPAN, as it tirelessly works to enhance the well-being and quality of life for Nigerian artists.
Bolaji Amusan, speaking on behalf of TAMPAN, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the departed colleagues. He fervently prayed for divine solace and strength during this difficult time, expressing the association’s deep sorrow over the untimely demise of these talented individuals.
“The news of the untimely departure of popular Nollywood stars, Murphy Afolabi, Mukaila Adedigba, Wasiu Adegbenro, and English actor Saint Obi, has left TAMPAN in a state of shock and great disbelief,” said Amusan in his statement.
He continued, “It is indeed a tragic occurrence, especially as TAMPAN is diligently working to improve the welfare of its members and the overall quality of life for Nigerian artists. We fervently pray that God grants eternal rest to these beloved individuals.”
Amusan emphasized the increasing prevalence of untimely deaths within the creative industry, calling it a cause for concern. He urged TAMPAN members and Nigerian artists at large to prioritize their health and well-being, underscoring the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“These unfortunate incidents serve as a clarion call to all members of our association and Nigerian artists in general to prioritize their health. It is crucial, especially at this time, to remind individuals within the creative sector in Nigeria to create space for recreation and take periodic breaks from their work,” added Amusan.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Saint Obi passed away at the age of 57 following an extended battle with illness. Murphy Afolabi, aged 49, tragically succumbed to complications resulting from a slip in his bathroom on Sunday. Mukaila Adedigba’s demise occurred on May 13, while Wasiu Adegbenro, popularly known as “Techno,” a revered sound recordist, breathed his last on May 14.
The entertainment industry, alongside TAMPAN, remains in mourning as it grapples with the tremendous loss of these gifted artists. The legacies left behind by Mukaila Adedigba, Wasiu Adegbenro, Murphy Afolabi, and Saint Obi will forever be cherished and remembered by their colleagues, fans, and the Nigerian film fraternity.
