Barcelona has made history by bringing on 15-year-old forward Lamine Yamal in their 4-0 win over Real Betis on Saturday, making him the youngest player ever to play in La Liga for the Catalan club. Although he was not the youngest player ever to play for the team, as Albert Almasque holds that title with his participation in the Macaya cup in 1902 at 13 years, 11 months and six days old.
Yamal, a winger, made his debut by replacing Gavi with four minutes plus stoppage time remaining in the game, at the young age of 15 years, nine months, and 16 days old. According to reports, Yamal demonstrated innate talent in the final third of the pitch during his brief cameo, which is rare to find in players his age.
Xavi, Barcelona’s coach, praised Yamal’s maturity and described him as a special player, comparing him to Lionel Messi and Ansu Fati, who also made their debuts at a young age for the club.
Xavi further stated, “He played 10 minutes, but did well, he can mark an era at the club.” Yamal had a shot on target during his debut, and he even created a chance for Ousmane Dembele with a scooped pass over the top for the French winger.
Yamal’s debut was the talk of the squad, with Barcelona winger Raphinha revealing that the team was amazed by the youngster’s performance.
Raphinha said, “We were talking about this on the bench, when I was 15, I think I was playing for my neighborhood team, and seeing him come on in this stadium, with all these people, is incredible.” Barcelona now holds an 11 point lead at the top of the table, and Yamal’s debut has provided fans with something to look forward to as he continues to develop as a player.
