A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Sunday at Ladipo Oluwole Street, GRA, Apapa, Lagos State, just 24 hours after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inspected and ordered the demolition of some buildings in Banana Island due to defective structures. The collapse reportedly occurred during an early morning thunderstorm in Lagos.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Magret Adeseye, confirmed the incident and stated that there were no casualties, with efforts underway to remove the debris. Asimiyu Tiamiyu, a volunteer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council Development Area, who was among the first responders at the scene, also reported no casualties.
Tiamiyu explained that all workers at the construction site had taken a break for the Sallah holiday, which is why no one was involved in the incident. He emphasized the need for the state government to address the recurring issue of building collapses, which have resulted in the loss of lives and billions of Naira worth of property.
Just two weeks after a seven-story building collapsed at Banana Island, Ikoyi, another five-story building collapsed in Apapa, Lagos.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that evacuation operations were ongoing at 4 pm. He reported that the second-floor front area of the building at Plot 5996 (NOS 43B) along Ladipo OLUWOLE Street, Apapa Local Government Area, Lagos, collapsed in the early hours of April 23, 2023.
Oke-Osanyitolu added that the property had been served with the CN, STW, and Seal Up Notices by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA). A senior LABSCA official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the ill-fated building was an ongoing construction with a provisional development permit for a two-floor structure. The official said that no authorization was given for the additional floor, which was completed, and that the site had been sealed and cordoned off.
