Bayern Munich head coach, Thomas Tuchel, believes that his team needs to have “belief” as they face “one of football’s biggest tests” against Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Tuchel’s remarks come after Bayern’s narrow 1-0 victory against Freiburg on Saturday, which helped the club remain at the top of the Bundesliga.
Despite having a few injured players, Tuchel is confident that his team will give their best shot against City, who have been performing excellently in recent times. Tuchel stated, “We’re going to get there with courage, aware that we will need to produce a great performance.” The coach is no stranger to defeating Manchester City in the Champions League, having masterminded Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over City in the 2021 final.
Tuchel understands that the Champions League is a competition where anything can happen, and matches are decided on the day. He believes that “when you are ready and when you believe in yourself,” anything is possible.
Regarding the upcoming match against Manchester City, Tuchel mentioned, “I haven’t looked into the match against Man City yet, because we’ve been quite busy ourselves.” Tuchel also praised former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, who continues his return from injury. Mane missed Senegal’s World Cup campaign due to a leg injury and has not scored for Bayern since October. However, Tuchel believes that Mane made a significant step forward in Bayern’s match against Freiburg, saying, “I think he made an important step forward today. Defensively and offensively, he was extremely diligent.” Tuchel also appreciated Mane’s contribution to the team and expressed satisfaction with the player’s performance.
