The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Cross River has urged the Department of State Security (DSS) to invite Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), for questioning over his comments against the swearing-in of President-Elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The APC stated that Baba-Ahmed’s remarks on national television had the potential to derail Nigeria’s hard-earned democracy.
The APC’s call for Baba-Ahmed’s arrest was made by the state party chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, during a press briefing in Calabar. Eba expressed concern over Baba-Ahmed’s statement that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, should not swear in the President-elect, and that there would be no swearing-in ceremony. Eba said that the statement was too strong and appeared to have some circumstantial evidence, which needed clarification from Baba-Ahmed.
Eba also urged all APC members and Cross River residents to embark on fasting and prayers to avert any possible truncation of the government transition on May 29, 2023. He said that nobody should be allowed to interfere with Nigeria’s democracy and that the APC would not tolerate any action that threatened the peace and stability of the country.
The APC’s call for Baba-Ahmed’s arrest has generated mixed reactions, with some people expressing concern over the party’s attempt to stifle free speech and intimidate opposition candidates. Others have applauded the APC’s stance, saying that Baba-Ahmed’s comments were reckless and could incite violence.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party has yet to react to the APC’s call for Baba-Ahmed’s arrest. However, political analysts have warned that the current tension between the APC and the LP could escalate if both parties fail to adopt a more conciliatory approach to political discourse.
