The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared a three-day mourning period for the victims of a fatal accident involving a BRT staff bus carrying Lagos State Government workers to the state Secretariat in Alausa on Thursday morning. The accident occurred when the bus, number 33, collided with a train at the PWD Bus Stop in Ikeja, Lagos.
Two people were killed instantly, and four others died later at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja. The driver attempted a dangerous turn at the PWD rail crossing, but the bus was hit by an oncoming train, which dragged it to another location.
Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the victims at the hospital and announced the suspension of all political campaigns and half-day work for state employees, starting from Friday at 12 pm. He also ordered flags to be flown at half-mast.
According to the hospital, 42 people suffered moderate injuries, 29 had severe injuries, eight had mild injuries, and six died in the accident.
The Governor expressed his gratitude to Dr. AbdulAzeez Olajide Adediran, the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), popularly called Jandor, and the candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr. Rhodes-Vivour, for visiting the accident scene.
