Abdulaziz Yar’adua, a younger brother of the late President Umaru Yar’adua, has been declared the winner of the Katsina Central Senatorial District election.

Yar’adua is a retired lieutenant colonel in the Nigerian army.

Aminu Kankia, returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the result in Katsina on Sunday.

Kankia said Yar’Adua polled a total of 153,512 votes to defeat Aminu Sirajo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 152,140 votes.

The returning officer added that Gambo Abubakar of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) received 16,005 votes, while Aminu Gide of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) got 781 votes.

Commenting on his victory, Yar’Adua thanked the people for their support and assured them of providing lasting impacts to the district.

“I am deeply humbled and grateful for the overwhelming support from the people of Katsina central. Thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to serve you. I promise to work tirelessly to deliver on our promises and make a positive impact in our community,” Yar’Adua tweeted on Monday.

“Let’s continue to work together to build a brighter future for all.”
