Nigerian comic sensation Lasisi Elenu has been criticized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) over his alleged misrepresentation of Nigerian lawyers in his skits.
Lasisi is well known for his comedy skits in which he gives a hilarious (and often times accurate) impressions of certain individuals usually associated with a profession of stereotype.
His comic work has made one of the most beloved online comic acts in the country, but apparently, not everyone finds them funny.
The NBA, through one of its executives, Habeeb Lawal, called out the comedian over what it called a misrepresentation of lawyers in his skits, noting that the association has seen his videos and stating that while they appreciate his humor and creativity, there is need for him to properly represent them in his skits.
The tweet reads in part:
Dear @lasisielenu, We’ve been tagged! We beg to use you as a point of reference to all other comedians. Lawyers have awesome sense of humour, as such we enjoy your jokes & appreciate the creativity. However, if you must represent our profession in your works, kindly ensure you properly adorn the wig, bip & gown.”
According to Lawal, Lasisi has a right of expression but if he does so at the expense of ridiculing their profession, necessary steps will be taken.
