The Nigerian community in Canada has been thrown into a state of shock as Deborah Onwu, a Nigerian social worker, has been murdered in Calgary.
Onwu’s demise occurred at a Youth Care home on Friday and the deed was done by an 18-year-old she was caring for.
The President of the Nigerian Canadian Association of Calgary, Seun Ogunsola, said even though he hadn’t known the deceased personally, others have spoken about her gentility, kindness, and dedication to her work.
We are shocked. You know these things happen, but you feel like Calgary is a safer community. You never think anything would happen in your community.Seun Ogunsola – pmnewsnigeria.com
Ogunsola stated that Onwu may not have relatives living in Calgary as members of the Nigerian association have tried to get in touch with her next of kin but so far their efforts have been in vain.
The suspected killer, a young man named Jacob Spencer Newman, was arrested in downtown Calgary and has been charged with second-degree murder and will appear in court on Friday.
